Artist Statement

My art is an exploration of self, experiences, and the unseen aspects of society. Through experimentation with traditional and unconventional mediums, I engage with materials as metaphors, or color and other signifiers to produce associations. I intend to engage with the viewer directly, often provoking a reaction that reflects the self. My work is confrontational at times, showing the gritty reality of the human experience. In my paintings this can be seen in my bold choices of color, material, and subject matter or composition. While in my printmaking, often delving more into political statements, this appears in connected imagery as well as color correlations. I find working in more monochromatic schemes also lets me focus more on certain themes I wish to display. Recently, I have been pushing myself to work without a direct reference as well, embracing spontaneity and allowing a more free flowing creative process.

My inspirations in my art come from lived experiences, or in ways I observe a sense of commonality that is typically overlooked. The work intends to touch on the shared experiences we tend to avoid discussing out of judgement or fear. As young adults in this turbulent time, we are faced with fixing systems that shaped us in our formative years, but are now being exposed for the failure they were. I intend to make commentary around party culture, neglect of the body and soul, overstimulation, consumerism, and toxic masculinity in the modern era. We often want to critique these problems and struggles from a separated place of observation, but this is a farce. As a society we all share the negatives and positives these assumptions create, and I wish to break down these barriers to expose these shared experiences encouraging understanding and community. Ultimately my work is an invitation, not to judge, but to accept and sit with these uncomfortable parts we usually hide. My goal isn’t to provoke a revelation, it’s to show that none of this is experienced alone.
